Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg have been working together since 1979, when they moved to Transjo Sweden to study at the Orrefors Factory Glass School. Two magical years followed in Smaland, the Swedish forest region, as assistants to Ann Wolf and Wilke Adolfsson. For the next twenty years they worked from their studio in Nonfoux, Switzerland and in 2001 they relocated to Paris. The latest move in 2015 took them to rural Wales and a view over the hills; a third act in a long nomadic journey.

Beginning as a two person hotshop making clean, functional designs for everyday use, Baldwin and Guggisberg embarked on collaborations with Rosenthal Studio Line, working with designers Philip Rosenthal and Henk Staal. Later collaborations followed at Steuben working with Chris Hacker and at Venini with design director Roberto Gasparotto.

The introduction of their Guardiani and Cortegiane sculptures at the Venezia Aperto Vetro exhibition in Venice, in the mid ’90s, marked a major innovation in their work, transforming the vessel form into free standing sculpture. Their experimentation with “batutto” cutting techniques with Muranese cutter Paolo Ferro, would eventually culminate in a series of tall elegant sculptures which would be exhibited at the Ebeltoft Museum in Denmark. Their current work has included many private and public outdoor installations, has been honored by numerous solo museum exhibitions and publications, and in 2007 Baldwin and Guggisberg were the subjects of a full length documentary film, “Fire Glass” by award winning Swiss filmmaker Pierre Kalbfuss.
