Mikyoung Jung

Mikyoung Jung, originally from South Korea, graduated in 2007 from the University of Sunderland, U.K, with a Master of Arts with Distinction in Glass. She has been working towards her PhD at Sydney College of the Arts in Sydney, Australia since August 2010, and in 2012 she conducted research in Seoul, South Korea, in order to further her PhD goal.

Jung often combines kiln-formed glass with metal and other materials, which she finds expands her artistic horizons. A piece in her current series titled “Impervious to Fear”, features an oval ring of colorful, sandblasted glass which frames a scene rendered in cut-out metal shapes depicting a young boy, as a simple abstract silhouette, crossing an expansion bridge. In the piece titled “In the Shadow of Giants” a group of people walk by on a busy city street with skyscrapers looming overhead.

These narratives create a visual journal, recording the many observations of Mikyoung Jung on her journeys. Her sculptures are landscapes, events and encounters experienced through the…

“eyes of a stranger, and on occasion an outsider…Through my work I try to convey the fact that despite cultural differences, there are vital behaviors and emotions that link all humans together.”
