Amethyst is the purple variety of Quartz and gets its vibrant color from impurities of iron and aluminum. It is found in Europe, Russia, India, Sri Lanka, East Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, Bolivia, USA, and Canada. The name Amethyst derives from the Greek word “ametusthos” meaning “not intoxicated.” The Greeks believed it to be an antidote for drunkenness and overindulgence. The Amethyst symbolizes piety, humility, sincerity and spiritual wisdom. Known as the bishop’s stone, it is still worn by Catholic Bishops today. Amethyst is a powerful and protective stone.
